Reinvent Retirement - Larry Britt
According to the 2000 census, the Beaufort County population is over 50,000 people and about 12% of them are over the age of 55. That counts for approximately 12,000 citizens, mostly living in retirement developments like Cypress Landing and Pamlico Plantation. This generation is growing stronger every year, and we can have quite an impact in Beaufort County.
I believe we need the involvement of these “veteran” citizens who are old enough to know what has been happening in this country, and are ready for something to be done about it. Our generation has the time, knowledge and experience to make a difference. If this is true, then why are we still sitting in our easy chairs and merely shaking our heads at what is happening in our own town, county and state and not taking action to improve it?
I’ve heard all the excuses, “I’m too busy with the grandchildren.” They’re the ones you need to do it for! “I don’t get around as well as I used to.” Then come join the rest of us, because we don’t either! “I don’t have the interest I used to.” Did you have any interest before the government got involved in the investment market? “I don’t know what to do.” There are plenty of people who do, and will help you decide where your talents can be best used.
One example is the Beaufort County Republican Party, which always needs help in spreading the conservative message. Others are the DownEast Republican Club, the Republican Men’s Club, and the Beaufort County Republican Women’s Club. These are great places to meet other Conservative Republicans, and listen to speakers provide information about issues of local importance.
Your involvement can help make Beaufort County a better place to live. We can no longer afford to sit back and wish someone would do what needs to be done. If we don’t get involved and address the problems NOW, then politics as it is happening today will only continue.
The French President Charles DeGaulle said it best,” I have come to the conclusion that politics is too serious a matter to be left to the politicians”. It needs to be in the hands of the citizens. Get proactive and get involved!
