Call for Unity - Larry Britt
“What we have here is a failure to communicate!” When the Captain of Road Prison 36 said that to Paul Newman in the movie Cool Hand Luke, it was about not really understanding what was meant by what was said.
Every two years we hear the same cry for unity in the Beaufort County Republican Party but do we really understand the importance of what this means. When I started the Western Wake Republican Club, it grew to almost 100 members within 2 years. The 7 other clubs in Wake County added almost 200 more Republican members. To say that everyone had different ideas would be an understatement. Instead of remaining at odds with one another, we celebrated being Republicans by campaigning hard for our views and then joining together to fight liberal Democrats. I’m proud to say that we were very successful in electing Republican mayors, commissioners, council members and school board members. We have that same opportunity here in Beaufort County.
I believe things have been done in this county that were not good things, things have been said that shouldn’t have been said, and good people have been maligned. Personal integrity has been challenged, and political values questioned. The main victim of all this was the Party! If we are to be more than we are today, I believe we need to stop this “failure to communicate” and realize that a unified Republican Party can be unstoppable in Beaufort County and have a terrific impact on Eastern North Carolina.
Everyone who is involved in Beaufort County Republican politics knows where I stand on Party unity. From the very first year I was President of the Down East Republican Club, I have had joint meetings hoping to bridge the gap between individuals and ideas. I wish they had been more successful, however, my efforts will continue. I have had the pleasure of working with a lot of individuals in Beaufort County and I have found that they are all terrific people with great ideas to move the Republican agenda ahead. That is our main purpose, move the Republican agenda ahead. It’s not to do it my way or your way, it’s to do it in a way that gets results. There are usually several ways of doing most things. Sometimes they all can work. It’s just a matter of finding the way that works best. It starts with communication!
