If We Don't, Who Will?

Larry Britt, Beaufort County Republican Party Chairman

Never before in my life have I been so afraid of the leaders of our Country. There have been times when I certainly didn’t agree with them, particularly during the terms of Bill Clinton, but I wasn’t afraid for the future of our Country. The policies and ideas of our current President are scary enough. However, when members of Congress act as if our treasury is their private bank and that they can spend money as they like, that really scares me! Where is the accountability? Although every member of Congress knows and acknowledges that we are Billions in debt and do not have any money, they still design a health care bill that will cost of Billions if not Trillions of dollars. Why is something that is going to cut cost, have to cost us Billions of dollars? Why, if they are going to cut waste and fraud from Medicare anyway in two years, why can’t they do it now? If people are dying from lack of health care, why is so much money being spend on free care in emergency rooms? Does it make sense to borrow money from China and give money to Brazil for them to drill for off shore oil, while not drilling off our own coast? Why do senior citizens on social security have to do without a cost of living increase, but employees of the federal government get a raise? Why is it that a “news” reporter can ask a member of congress a question and the member talks, but never answers the question, and the reporter just says “thank you”?

It doesn’t matter what your political affiliation is, you might still agree that common sense has gone out the window in Washington, DC. W.C. Fields once said that “Horse sense is the thing a horse has that keeps him from betting on people”. Why do we keep betting on the same old politicians as we have been doing for the past 50 plus years? In the thirties, Will Rogers once said, “There is good news from Washington today. Congress is deadlocked and can’t act”. Even then, people didn’t feel safe when Congress was in session. Our Congressional “leaders” in session today, and the American public is afraid!

Today’s level of fear of Congress is unprecedented! Fear for our pocket books, but even more fear for our freedoms, freedoms that were guaranteed to us by our Constitution. Most citizens go about their daily business, not paying much attention to our elected officials except at election time. What our representative tells us then is only what they want us to know! The shape our government is in today is not because of what our elected officials have done, but rather what we, the owners of our country, have NOT done. No matter what party you belong to, we have to ask questions of our representatives, challenge their statements, and demand accountability.
