I'm a Republican and I believe in the Conservative Republican Party!

Larry Britt, Beaufort County Republican Party Chairman

I watched a popular Sunday morning show in which they talked about affirming what you believe over and over, and not letting the temporary situation you are in now affect how you think, and most importantly, how you talk. If you want to feel good about your future and have a positive outlook, it is important that you talk about feeling good and how bright your future is going to be. If you say it often enough, you start to believe it, and you can make it happen. It was clearly a step beyond positive thinking to positive affirmation, which has been proven a successful technique for many years.

It reminded me of the situation that we have today with the Republican Party. Too many Republicans have given up on the Republican Party because, unfortunately, it has been controlled by moderates for many years. Too often I hear Republicans say that they are fed up with both parties, so they become an Independent, to avoid having to defend their belief in a party that doesn't represent their Conservative values right now. The latest voter registration numbers confirm that more people are registering Unaffiliated than Republican or Democrat. Without a doubt, that is the easiest thing to do. But, as for me, “I'm a Republican and I believe in the Conservative Republican Party”.

In many cases, however, those critics have been right in the past. There hasn't been much difference in the political parties in the last few years. Both parties spend way too much money. Just about all politicians say one thing to get elected, forget it all after winning, and then care more about getting re-elected than listening to the people. You can't help believe that they think we're not very smart, or at the least, not paying very good attention. In too many cases, they have been absolutely right about our lack of information and attention, and Conservative Republicans paid the price in the last election. But remember, Conservatism didn't lose in the last election; it just wasn't on the ballot. I don't believe the solution is to refer to ourselves as another name but instead, demand that our Party return to its Conservative core. We have to demand that our leaders practice those Conservative values that made our Party, and this country, better than any other in the world.

If this country is going to return to common sense government, it’s not going to be Independents, Moderates, Patriots, Unaffiliated, or anything in between that’s going to do it. It’s going to be Conservatives in the Republican Party! We have the winning formula and it’s nothing new; run on, believe in and implement the Constitution! Conservatism has worked every time it’s been tried! Let’s don’t run from the Republican Party, let’s take it back! We can do that by standing side by side, letting our Republican leaders know what we think, making an effort and participating in the process. We must do that most of all, by not missing an opportunity to say out loud and often, “I’m a Republican and I believe in the Conservative Republican Party”.
