Democrats Have The Fairest Heart?
Larry Britt, Beaufort County Republican Party Chairman
“We just simply believe that Democrats have the fairest heart.” Those are the words of Alice Mills Sadler, Chairwoman of the Beaufort County Democratic Party, as she explains why she believes Democrats belong in both of the state’s Senate seats. I believe this explains the Democrat Party’s approach to solving most problems facing the Country today. If you do what “feels good”, and makes you “feel better about yourself”, then it doesn’t matter what the results are from your actions. They insist on being judged by their intentions alone.
Unfortunately, like most Democrats, Ms. Sadler has not looked at all the alternatives to helping disadvantaged people being affected by the lack of health insurance today. Democrats usually envision the Government as the first, and the best way of solving most problems. As Thomas Jefferson once said, “It is error alone which needs the support of government. Truth can stand by itself.” The Democrats idea of “truth” on health care reform cannot stand on its own; it must have the force of government for it to happen. And it must happen quickly before the American people understand all its implications. Taking the time to find the right solution seems more difficult than just doing what makes you “feel good for the moment”. The health care solutions they are seeking in Congress will make the Democrats “feel good about themselves” because they are more concerned about passing “something”, even if it is not the best solution. But, before we know it, the costs of health care will skyrocket, the quality will decrease because of rationing, and the best health care in the world will become no better than anybody else’s.
I believe there is a simple alternative plan. Contained in the Republican plan are ideas that have worked every time they’ve been tried, and have given the United States the greatest health care system in the world. Most of today’s problems are caused by our government being involved, not because of a defective system. I suggest we let the free enterprise work on our health care problem! Let our Government set the minimum requirements, but turn capitalism loose and let competition work. The more government is involved, the harder it will be to solve our problem, and yet still maintain the best health care in the world.
Yes, Ms. Sadler, sometimes Republicans do hide behind what we call “strict compliance to regulation”. It’s called the Constitution! The document that puts limits on what the government can do. That inconvenient document that President Obama and most elected Democrats today see as an obstacle to be overcome so they can remake America the way they think it should be. Today, Conservative Republicans are determined to return our Country to the principles that work. Ambassador Jeanne Kirkpatrick said “History is a better guide than good intentions”. It’s time we take a closer look at the ideas that have produced results in the past and less at slogans that may seem to make us feel better today.
