We will be meeting at the Pirates’ Grill and Pub, and will meet on Monday, March 22, 2010. The Pirates’ Grill and Pub opens exclusively for the Down East Republican Club members and our guests. We order off a menu featuring variety and reasonable prices.

Monday will be variety night as we feature Chris Hayes, J.W. Pope Civitas Institute, as our keynote speaker. Also featured is Bill Cook, candidate for NC House in the 6th District, and Donald Dixon, candidate for Beaufort County Sheriff. Other Republican candidates are invited to attend and will be offered the opportunity to speak.

Chris Hayes - John William Pope Civitas Institute

Chris Hayes, Senior Legislative Analyst, will review Civitas polling information and key issues for the 2010 state election and why they are important. There will be time to for questions and discussion. This presentation is particularly important to candidates running for school board, county and state offices.

Questions that come up often:

  • Why is the state in a budget crunch?

  • What can be done to reduce taxes?

  • Jobs, health care and education are the top issues in North Carolina; what are the citizens perspectives on these issue?

  • How important is illegal immigration and what can be done to eliminate it?

  • How has the recession impacted crime rates?

  • If I'm a candidate what do I need to do to get elected?

Chris Hayes came to the Civitas Institute with a varied background in politics and public policy having worked in numerous political campaigns at the local, state and federal level over the past 10 years beginning with Robin Hayes’ campaign for Governor in 1996. Chris also served as the first ever IT Director at the NC Republican Party where he maintained the statewide voter file and developed software to empower grassroots activists with customized voter lists. He later served in the Washington, DC office of Congressman John Linder (R-GA) as a legislative aide where he assisted in promoting Congressman Linder’s FairTax legislation that would replace the IRS with a national retail sales tax. He is a graduate of UNC-Chapel Hill with a B.A. in Political Science, and received a Master's degree in Business Administration from Campbell University.

Bill Cook, Candidate NC House

Bill Cook is Finance Chairman for the Beaufort County Republican Party. Bill has worked hard as a Party activist and achieved much. If something Republican is happening, Bill is likely to be there. This is Bill's first attempt at Public office. Bill's key issues are the economy, unemployment, state spending, taxes, and unresponsive government. Bill and his wife Holly reside in Cypress Landing.

Donald Dixon, Candidate for Beaufort County Sheriff

Donald is a self employed businessman and lifelong resident of Beaufort County. Donald says that he will reduce cost at the Sheriff's department and add one more officer per shift at no cost to the taxpayers. Donald opposes CALEA (Commission of Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies) and estimates that $250,000 in wasted cost has resulted because of the work required by CALEA. Dixon has a B.S. Degree in Criminal Justice from Mount Olive College and a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice from East Carolina University.

This is an important meeting and is open to all club members and citizens. We invite you to attend, listen to the presentation, ask questions and voice your opinion politely. Contact your friends and invite them.
