Why I am running for the Beaufort County School Board . . .

Before retiring from the Marine Corp, one of my responsibilities was to transform young men and women into soldiers. In this position it was necessary that I evaluate and, if needed, redirect young Marines. I am thus familiar with many of the deficiencies that our young people have upon entering adulthood. If allowed, it is my desire to promote one trait that transcends all others for success: ACCOUNTABILITY. It is only when you take responsibility for your life, that you can take control of your life. This principle applies to students, teachers, parents, administration, and the school board.

If Elected …

With your input, I will determine if our present objectives are producing the desired results. If not, I will be instrumental in redefining clear objectives and structuring frequently reviewed goals that will produce these objectives. These objectives should include the development of the complete student: academics, character, extracurricular. You can’t get anywhere, if you don’t know where you want to go.

Concerning accountability: Preferably, at a young age and certainly at any age, students need to become accountable for whom they are and who they are becoming. This is done by accepting responsibility for oneself, one’s work, and one’s behavior. In other words, we become the product of our own choices. There are simple, but effective, ways to teach this that need to be incorporated into everyday curriculum.

I also have a degree and background in accounting. It is important to have a well-rounded school board. Educators are certainly an important element of this board, but it is critical that there be someone capable of evaluating and helping to supervise a budget. That has been a problem in the past that I can help correct.

The nature of both of my careers has trained me to be an efficient problem solver. I believe in research - the gathering of all the facts, and then the structuring of workable solutions. I have a reputation of “getting the job done”.

A Promise . . .

And as I expect accountability from others, I can assure you that you can expect it from me. I will not “Go along to get along”, but I will question and seek practical solutions. Your tax dollars will be respected and spent wisely. I will be a phone call away from those whom I represent.
