The annual Beaufort County Republican Reagan Day Dinner was held on Thursday, February 19 at the Washington Yacht and Country Club. I had the honor of hosting this yearly event and we couldn’t have asked for a more energized and enthusiastic group. Over 100 Republicans attended to “buffer the coffers of the County Party”, which we did at one of our highest levels ever, and to hear our guest speaker, Senator Richard Burr.
Upon his arrival, Senator Burr held a private meeting with the Reagan Day Dinner sponsors where he answered all questions and discussed current issues. Senator Burr then delivered a very informative speech that emphasized how he witnessed Republicans being ostracized from the resent legislative process concerning the stimulus bill. He was however, hopeful that we would have an impact in the future. Senator Burr stated that this year is not an “off” year, but a year that is crucially important for the 2010 elections. The next two years need the “best and brightest of Republicans” to become involved. Republican registration needs to increase similar to 2004, which resulted in President Bush’s second term and not a John Kerry presidency.

BCRP Chairman Ashley Woolard introducing Senator Richard Burr |
Ashley Woolard, BCRP Chairman, emphasized the need for more involvement on the local level in all capacities. Ashley presented awards for outstanding service to Del Stutzman and Ed Henry, for their work in coordinating volunteers and keeping the Republican office up and running last year before the election. He also thanked the Reagan Day Dinner committee for coordinating an outstanding event in such a short length of time. The decorating group, which consisted of Dot Moate, Helen Eckman, and Monte Asby, did an excellent job of decorating the Country Club for this years Reagan Day Dinner.
If you were unable to attend this year, you were missed as we all had an entertaining evening with fellow Beaufort County Republicans. We plan to extend more opportunities this year for us to share our enthusiasm and ideas. Please call me or any member of the executive committee to find out how you can help.
Larry Britt, President, Down East Republican Club
Member, BCRP executive committee
